Oceanic Living Data Animation (2013)

Neptune's necklace avatars

Just as the Oceanic Bliss seagrass avatarevolved from unintended artefacts of motion capture technology, so these mysterious forms appeared for Merindah Funnell. They appeared as she was exploring animation software to describe the dance of the iconic intertidal seaweed, Neptune's necklace (Hormosira banksii), that she knows from growing up beside the coast south of Sydney, on the land of her ancient forebears.

Water molecules freeze and thaw

Merindah's Neptune's necklace avatars join an animated dance of water molecules freezing and thawing, that traces hand gestures by physicist Cameron Smithas he explains this vital process in Antarctic sea ice, that drives ancient ocean currents that regulate conditions for life as we know it.
